Mezzi is a Betterment alternative for people who want financial guidance while keeping control of their existing accounts. Betterment remains relevant when you want an automated portfolio managed for you. Before comparing fees, decide which responsibility you want to hand over: understanding the decision, placing the trades, or both.
That distinction can save an unnecessary move. If you like Betterment's investment management but want to consider an outside 401(k), checking balance, credit-card debt, or a home purchase together, the missing piece may be a broader advice workflow. Adding a connected view does not require selling your Betterment investments.
This guide concentrates on that choice. For the mechanics of an actual brokerage transfer, use your receiving institution's current instructions and Betterment's documentation. Mezzi is not a receiving brokerage.
Which alternative are you actually looking for?
| Your reason for searching | A practical next step | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| You want someone else to rebalance and implement a portfolio | Compare managed investing services, including Betterment | Investment approach, tax features, fees, account eligibility |
| You want advice across accounts you already own | Evaluate Mezzi alongside your existing institutions | Connection completeness, context, quality of answers |
| You want to choose and trade securities yourself | Evaluate self-directed brokerage options | Trading, account types, transfer support, expenses |
| You want human planning support | Compare the specific professional engagement | Advisor access, deliverables, implementation and scope |
| You mainly want a clearer household picture | Test a connected view before changing custody | Cash, investments, liabilities and manual assets |
Betterment itself now advertises self-directed stock and ETF investing as well as automated portfolios. Describing it as offering only prebuilt portfolios would miss that distinction. Its self-directed account does not carry the automated-investing management fee. Betterment pricing and account types
What Betterment does well
Betterment's automated service takes on continuing investment work. Its published offer includes portfolio construction, rebalancing, reinvestment and tax-related technology. That is useful for someone who does not want to decide how to invest each contribution or continually maintain target weights. The convenience has value even when another tool's subscription costs less. Betterment investing
The key question is whether you still want that service. A reader who has become more interested in investing may enjoy evaluating individual decisions. Another reader may be building a business or caring for family and actively prefer delegation. There is no reason to treat the second choice as less sophisticated.
Betterment's Premium offering also provides access to financial experts under its plan terms. Comparing that engagement with an AI conversation alone would leave out part of what the customer is buying. Ask which questions are covered, who answers them and whether the service will implement the resulting plan. Premium scope and pricing
Where Mezzi fits
Mezzi brings Investments, Banking, Other Assets and Liabilities into a connected financial picture. That includes supported investment accounts, checking and savings, credit cards and manually entered assets such as real estate. Connection availability and the detail received vary by institution. Mezzi account groups
AI Personalization lets you provide goals, preferences and rules that account balances cannot communicate on their own. You might explain that part of your cash is reserved for a move, that you prefer to avoid unnecessary taxable sales, or that a family member's income varies. These are inputs for advice, not standing trade orders.
Exposure X-Ray helps investigate underlying exposure in supported funds. That makes a specific question possible: is a direct stock position adding to a concentration already present inside several funds? The next conversation can connect that observation to your goals, time horizon and other financial commitments.
Mezzi provides guidance. You remain responsible for implementing changes through your institutions. A Delegation should not be confused with a discretionary trading mandate, and a tax-related answer does not replace complete tax records or a tax professional's review when needed. Mezzi plans
A household example: the account is fine, the question is bigger
Consider a hypothetical household with $200,000 in a managed taxable portfolio, $300,000 in workplace retirement accounts and $60,000 in savings. The household plans a renovation but has not decided how much of the savings is available to invest.
An account-level investment strategy and a household cash decision are different tasks. Rebalancing the taxable portfolio does not determine the renovation budget. Likewise, an AI conversation about cash does not itself rebalance the portfolio.
A useful evaluation would proceed this way:
- List the purpose of each account and identify the money reserved for the renovation.
- Confirm that connected balances agree with institution records and that the account dates are recent enough for the question.
- Save the relevant goal and constraints in AI Personalization.
- Ask which information is still missing before discussing new investments.
- Compare the reasoning with the household's existing investment plan before taking action.
The trial succeeds if it clarifies what the household can decide and what still needs verification. A confident answer that ignores the renovation reserve is a poor answer, even if it recommends an attractive portfolio.
Compare costs without pretending the services are identical
Betterment currently lists a $5 monthly base price, changing to 0.25% annually with at least $200 in recurring monthly deposits or transfers, or a qualifying balance of $24,000. Premium requires $100,000 in eligible investments and charges 0.65% on the first $1 million, including the base fee and Premium increment. Eligible amounts from $1–$2 million are charged 0.15%, and amounts above $2 million 0.10%; the additional Premium charge does not apply beyond the first $1 million. Check which accounts count toward each threshold. Underlying fund costs are separate. Current Betterment fees
Mezzi offers a free entry point. Advisory is $399 annually and Concierge is $999 annually. The paid plans add advice and support capacity; they do not turn Mezzi into a brokerage that executes a managed portfolio. Current Mezzi plans
For a simplified comparison, a constant $200,000 balance charged at 0.25% would produce $500 of annual management fees. That is $101 more than a $399 subscription. It is not $101 of equivalent-service savings: the two services do different work. This example excludes fund costs, changing balances, taxes and any other charges.
If you keep both, the subscription is an additional cost. Decide whether the broader guidance is useful enough to justify it. If you stop using managed investing, include the time and responsibility you will take on.
A completed retain, supplement or replace example
Return to the hypothetical household with $200,000 in Betterment, $300,000 in workplace plans and $60,000 in savings. Suppose the renovation is budgeted at $25,000 and the household wants to preserve a separate $20,000 reserve. That leaves $15,000 of the stated cash uncommitted, before other obligations. This arithmetic is a decision input, not a recommendation to invest it.
| Function | Retain managed investing | Add Mezzi for guidance | Move to self-direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintain the $200,000 portfolio | Betterment continues its mandate | Betterment still implements | Household chooses a brokerage process and maintains allocation |
| Understand cash available after renovation/reserve | Use household records and relevant planning support | State $25,000 and $20,000 constraints in AI Personalization; inspect whether the answer preserves them | Household still needs the same cash analysis |
| Coordinate workplace accounts | Review the wider allocation using available records | Connect supported accounts and test exposure/context | Household remains responsible for workplace-plan actions |
| Approximate named annual charges | $500 base management at constant balance | $500 + $399 Advisory = $899 | $399 Advisory if chosen, plus any retained services and investment costs |
A completed decision could be: retain Betterment because the household values automatic implementation, and try Mezzi Free for the unresolved cross-account question. Consider Advisory only if repeated questions justify the additional subscription. Another household may prefer self-direction, but then the replacement includes a real contribution, rebalancing and record-keeping process—not merely canceling a fee.
The acceptance test is concrete: the answer must identify $15,000 as the preliminary uncommitted amount, preserve the two separate commitments, flag missing obligations and avoid instructing a taxable sale without relevant records. This is an illustrative test specification, not a claimed live result from either product.
Before changing providers
Write down what will replace each function you currently use: regular contributions, investment selection, rebalancing, tax-sensitive decisions and record keeping. A good alternative should cover the functions you value or make the new responsibility explicit.
Then distinguish connecting an account from transferring it. Connecting gives an application access to supported information. Transferring changes where investments are held. It may involve fees, fractional shares, account-registration requirements and tax-sensitive decisions. Betterment's published documentation also warns that moving assets out of a Tax-Coordinated Portfolio can affect rebalancing in accounts left behind. Betterment transfer documentation
Do not sell a portfolio simply to test Mezzi. Start with supported connections, examine the data, and decide whether the guidance addresses your original reason for looking. If you later choose a transfer, obtain instructions from the receiving institution for your exact account type.
When staying with Betterment makes sense
Stay if the main benefit you value is continuing managed implementation and the service still fits your goals. Try an additional advice workflow if the unresolved questions cross institutions or connect investing to the rest of your financial life. Consider self-directed investing only if you want responsibility for both decisions and follow-through.
