Hey there!

Alongside our recent big launches like Account Tags and Performance comparisons, we’ve been rolling out many smaller but mighty updates! Now, with updated Stock Details, Unrealized Returns, and Realized Returns pages you can answer even more important questions about your portfolio.

Stock details: Available trades across accounts

Bought or sold a lot of a particular stock in multiple accounts? Now you can see available trade history in one place. Click on any stock to navigate to view important information like cost basis, gain or loss since purchase, tax status, and account. Finding your trades across different accounts just got a lot easier.

Unrealized returns: Gains and losses on included holdings

Don't sell a stock before understanding your total return and potential taxes. In U.S. taxable accounts, gains on assets held one year or less are generally short-term; gains on assets held more than one year are generally long-term. Net short-term gains are generally taxed as ordinary income, while lower rates may apply to net long-term gains. Navigate to Unrealized returns on the Portfolio tab to see your gains, losses, and long or short-term tax status.

Realized returns: Long and short-term gains and losses

Stay ahead of large tax bills with a detailed view of long and short-term gains and losses on stocks you’ve already sold this year. Use the view to investigate potential tax-planning questions. Navigate to Realized returns on the Portfolio tab.

Margin accounts

If you invest with margin, we’ve made enhancements to the Allocation and Concentration cards on the Portfolio tab to better represent your true exposure to various stocks, sectors, and asset types. Let us know if things don’t look right!

Plus, we’ve polished up many places in the app for a better experience. What do you think? The original release also previewed another feature for the following week.

Use the three views for different questions

Stock details answer where a position sits and which available trades built it. Unrealized returns show the gain or loss on positions still held. Realized returns concern positions already sold. These are related views, not three amounts to add together as income.

For a simple illustration, a lot bought for $4,000 and now worth $5,000 has a $1,000 unrealized gain. Selling it for $5,000 would generally realize that gain before fees or adjustments. The tax result depends on the account, holding period and other relevant facts; the chart alone is not a tax return.

Check the source before making a tax decision

Reconcile quantities, acquisition dates and adjusted basis with the brokerage. Transfers, missing history, wash-sale adjustments and margin balances can complicate a clean-looking total. A realized-gain view also cannot establish all gains and losses from accounts that were never included.

For U.S. federal holding-period rules, see IRS Topic 409. Treat the release's margin-display improvement as help understanding exposure, not a reduction in the risks of borrowing to invest.
